05.12 - Assignment Completion and Revision

We started today's class with fifteen minutes of reading from everyone's free choice books (or any class novels that are currently being read). During this time I met individually with people about their books. At the end of this reading time, everyone recorded their progress on their reading sheets.

Next, we continued working on assignment revision and completion for quarters 2, 3, and 4. As people catch up with that work, I will introduce a final assignment series for the course. When that work is completed, individuals will be all set with their credit recapture.

04.17 - Revisions

We have changed the structure of our class some since a number of people completed their work and moved out of the recapture class. Individuals who are still in the class are currently working on revising and completing assignments from quarters 2 and 3. Since quarter 1 was largely based on reflection around activities facilitated by other students in class, we will look at a series of assignments to account for those credits. For the time being, everyone is continuing to work on their free choice reading (with 15 minutes provided in class and 2 hours per week expected to be read).

After the break, I will introduce assignments to account for any missing work from quarter one and to finish out the quarter. People will then have time to work on these assignments in class and will be finished with credit recapture when this work is completed.

Homework:

Read for two hours from your free choice book and/or novel-style class texts.

04.09 - The End of Meat

We started today's class with fifteen minutes of reading from everyone's free choice books (or any class novels that are currently being read). During this time I conferenced individually with people about their books. At the end of this reading time, everyone recorded their progress on their reading sheets.

We then returned to working with the vignette "They're Made out of Meat". We reviewed our previous discussions of this text and rewatched the short film adaptation of the piece and then discussed questions three and four on the "Inferencing with Meat" sheet. A significant portion of our discussion focused on ways in which the film adaptation did not meet expectations created by the vignette.

04.03 - Inferencing with Meat (part 2)

We started today's class with fifteen minutes of reading from everyone's free choice books (or any class novels that are currently being read). During this time I met and spoke individually with people about their books. At the end of this reading time, everyone recorded their progress on their reading sheets and tallied up their total page count for credit in their reading for this reading section.

We then returned to working with the vignette "They're Made out of Meat" from last class. We began by reviewing what inferences people had made about the story from last class. People who did not share their inferences last class were able to share inferences that they had made about the story. We then continued speaking about what else could be inferred from the text. We concluded this discussion with everyone sharing out what they thought the speakers (we said aliens) looked like and where the conversation was taking place (in a presidential office, on the deck of a space ship, etc).

Next, we watched an adaptation of this vignette in which everyone was asked to jot down notes to the following questions:

1 - How does the portrayal of this vignette compare to what you had imagined?
2 - Have the directors of this video made any assumptions about the story that don't fit with what we inferred from the text? Explain why or why not.

We will continue discussing the adaptation of this vignette next class.

Homework:

If you did not do so in class, finish responding to the questions about the video adaptation of "They're Made out of Meat."

04.01 - Inferencing with Meat

We started today's class with fifteen minutes of reading from everyone's free choice books (or any class novels that are currently being read). During this time I met and spoke individually with people about their books. At the end of this reading time, everyone recorded their progress on their reading sheets and tallied up their total page count for credit in their reading for this reading section.

We then returned to working with the vignette "They're Made out of Meat" from last class. We began by reviewing what inferences are and practiced by making inferences based on activity cards from my Tumblr site. We then took a look at the Inferencing with Meat sheet that we are using to guide our reading. Everyone had fifteen minutes to revisit the vignette and make as many inferences as they could about the speakers of the story. In the last five minutes of class, we began sharing these inferences out. We will finish sharing these out and wrap up our work with the story next class.

03.28 - Meat

We started today's class with fifteen minutes of reading from everyone's free choice books (or any class novels that are currently being read). During this time I met and spoke individually with people about their books. At the end of this reading time, everyone recorded their progress on their reading sheets.

Next, we started work with a text that is more of a vignette than a short story (a vignette is a scene exploring a topic, character, idea, setting, or emotion). To prepare for this vignette we talked a little bit about making inferences.

The Inference
An inference is something that goes deeper than what is immediately observable (a direct observation). A direct observation could be that a person on the bus is carrying an umbrella. An inference would be that that person is going to be outside later and suspects it is going to rain. If the umbrella were hot pink you could infer that that person has a bold and fun personality.

We then practiced making inferences by using some activity cards to infer meanings beyond what was immediately observable (If you'd like to continue practicing this, check out my activity card Tumblr).

Next, we read the vignette "They're Made out of Meat" by Terry Bisson. Two students alternated reading the piece. Then everyone wrote down their first impressions on what this story was about on the "Inferencing with Meat" sheet provided in class. We will continue working with this sheet next class.

03.26 - Malaysia Airlines Discussion

We started today's class with fifteen minutes of reading from everyone's free choice books (or any class novels that are currently being read). During this time I met and spoke individually with people about their books. At the end of this reading time, everyone recorded their progress on their reading sheets.

We then returned to our work researching the missing Malaysia airlines plane. Today, we were discussing the information that we had gained through our research and the perspectives that that had given people on the disappearance. Our discussion was focused around two main questions with everyone posing and discussing additional questions as they came up.

1 - What facts do we know about the disappearance of and search for this plane?

2 - Based on the information that we have about this disappearance and subsequent search, what seems to be the most likely scenario that caused the planes disappearance?

03.10 - Revisions

We started today's class with fifteen minutes of reading from everyone's free choice books (or any class novels that are currently being read). During this time I conferenced individually with people about their books. At the end of this reading time, everyone recorded their progress on their reading sheets.

Next, I returned work that was handed in last week. We reviewed the assignment from last week in which people were asked to discuss two identified elements from the story "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" which we had incorporated into a skit. In this discussion, everyone was asked to discuss what role that element played in their skit and the story and discuss any possible symbolic values the element carried. The most significant area of revision for those who had completed the assignment was to get more into detail discussing the role the element played and to explain it's symbolic value.

We took the rest of the period to write these up properly and discuss them (especially in light of our brainstorming activity that we did last class).

Homework:

If you did not do so in class, complete your discussion of two elements from the story/your skit.

03.06 - Elements of Outcasts

We started today's class with fifteen minutes in the library for people to get new free choice reading books or to continue adding to their next reads sheets.

Back in class, we returned to looking at the elements that formed the core of people's skits on Monday. To further analyze these elements we had an activity in which pairs of people rotated through stations focused on each element and described how that element was represented in their skit and in the story and what symbolic value it might have carried. We took time to review and discuss these responses at the end of class.

During this time I conferenced individually with people about their books. At the end of this reading time, everyone recorded their progress on their reading sheets and turned those sheets in. I then handed out reading sheets for our next block of reading (3/4 - 3/12).

Next, we returned to our work with "The Outcasts of Poker Flat". To explore some of the themes and ideas in this story, we returned to an activity (The Good Show) that we learned earlier in the year from a student in the class. Today we did the activity and next class we will debrief the experience. Directions for the activity are below.

02/11 - Assignment Reviews and Revision

We started today's class with fifteen minutes of reading from everyone's free choice books (or any class novels that are currently being read). At the end of this reading time, everyone recorded their progress on their reading sheets.

Our focus was then on returning work and reviewing class performance on some of our most recent assignments (book reviews and found poems). I presented the class with data and feedback on trends with these assignments including went well (+s) and areas where we will be focusing on improving (deltas). See graphs below. Everyone also had the opportunity to expand on their thinking with the assignment by completing the 100 level option (when successfully completed the grade for the assignment goes in as a 100).

In our review of performance on the found poems, we looked at examples of found poems from the original presentation of this topic:

02.03 - Found Poems

We started today's class with fifteen minutes of reading from everyone's free choice books (or any class novels that are currently being read). At the end of this reading time, everyone recorded their progress on their reading sheets.

We then returned to looking at the found poems that everyone worked on last class with the substitute. This is something that had confused a variety of people so we went back over the found poem sheet that had been handed out in class.

In reviewing this sheet, we took time to have an in-depth discussion of the poem on the back of this sheet ("Found Poem" by Howard Nemerov). Our discussion focused on what the poem was about and what message that topic was supposed to communicate.

We then returned to the front of the sheet and looked at how to make a found poem from the material there. I showed everyone two poems that I had made from the words on the sheet (see below). Then, everyone had time to try and make their own poem.

01.15 - Facilitation Observation Part II

We started today's class with fifteen minutes of reading from everyone's free choice books (or any class novels that are currently being read). At the end of this reading time, everyone recorded their progress on their reading sheets.

We then transitioned into our main activity for the day. As we round out the semester in Credit Recapture our focus is going to be on improving our approaches to facilitation.

To focus more specifically on this, I am going to lead a couple of activities with some students as participants and some students as observers. Today, we switched activities so that those students who participated last time were the ones observing how the activity was facilitated.

Individuals observing the facilitation today took note of the following elements:

Next class, we will discuss everyone's observations. Then, people will have new activities to choose and will keep in mind what they learned from their observations to better facilitate those activities.

Homework:

Finish filling out the facilitator observation form.

Read for two hours from your free choice book and/or novel-style class texts.

Complete missing work and revise any assignment that scored below a 92.

1.13 - Facilitation Observation and Activity

We started today's class with fifteen minutes of reading from everyone's free choice books (or any class novels that are currently being read). At the end of this reading time, everyone recorded their progress on their reading sheets.

We then transitioned into our main activity for the day. As we round out the semester in Credit Recapture our focus is going to be on improving our approaches to facilitation. To focus more specifically on this, I am going to lead a couple of activities with some students as participants and some students as observers. When we switch activities we will switch which students participate and which students observe. The focus of this observation is on how directions are presented and how the debrief portion of the activity is run. Observations are recorded on the facilitator observation form.

After everyone has had an opportunity to observe an activity and participate in an activity, we will discuss everyone's observations. Then, people will have new activities to choose and will keep in mind what they learned from their observations to better facilitate those activities.

Homework:

If you were an observer in today's class, finish filling out the facilitator observation form.

Read for two hours from your free choice book and/or novel-style class texts.

Complete missing work and revise any assignment that scored below a 92.

1.07 - Free Choice Books and Revisions

For the first part of class today, we went to the library so that people could check out new free choice reading books and build their "next reads" reading sheets to keep up a good list of books to read after finishing their current books.

In the remaining half of the period, I handed out grade report sheets, reviewed assignments, and everyone got copies of work that they needed to complete/revise.

Homework:

Read for at least two hours from your free choice book and/or novel-style class texts.
